If there are 2 left-turn lanes, can you U-turn from both?

News 6 viewers ask traffic questions

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.

A viewer named Keli asked: “If there are two left-turn lanes, can U-turns be made from both of them?”

Trooper Steve prefaced that he’s never seen this done, yet roads with two left-turn lanes are common in Florida.

“If you’re here in this right left-turning lane and you wanted to go southbound, no! Absolutely not, because you’re going to cause a crash,” he said. “If you’re out here and you make that type of turn, think about what you’re doing. You’re crossing in front of all this other traffic, it’s going to be an absolute mess. Don’t. Please, do not do that.”

You’ve got to be in the leftmost left-turn lane in order to conduct that U-turn and, of course, you’ve got to make sure there’s no signage saying you can’t.
