Dubsdread public golf course celebrates a century in Orlando

Golf course opened in 1924 but was bought by the city in 1978

ORLANDO, Fla. – City officials, including Mayor Buddy Dyer, gathered on Thursday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Dubsdread Golf Course, one of Orlando’s oldest and most historic public golf courses.

Reflecting on the significance of maintaining the course, Mayor Dyer emphasized the importance of keeping the facility available to the public.

“You have seen a lot of failed golf courses around Florida that have closed, and we are going to make sure we keep this golf course productive, sustainable,” said Dyer.

The Dubsdread Golf Course, which first opened in 1924, was purchased by the City of Orlando in 1978. Known for its accessibility, the course offers an affordable alternative to private clubs with high greens fees, making it an inclusive option for residents and visitors alike.

“Sometimes golf is an expensive sport and requires equipment that costs a lot of money. You will see private courses around here, the greens fees are just out of reach,” said Dyer.

District Three City Commissioner Robert Stuart also spoke about the historical and community significance of the golf course.

“In short, it was built way out of town 100 years ago. Orlando has grown so much that it’s now one of the premier golf courses in the entire country,” Stuart said.

The city has plans for Dubsdread, including the addition of a new driving range, a learning center, and a snack shack.

Rodney Reifsneider, the course’s general manager, said the course’s rich history and its draw for golfers nationwide.

“Pete Dye Sr. played here. His wife went to Rollins College and got a doctorate over there. Sam Snead, Babe Zaharias. There’s some amazing golfers that have played here through the years, and I think it’s so important to have that history and for the growth of the game to be able to have these newer golfers come in,” Reifsneider said.

City leaders are hopeful for another century of success.

“In Orlando, this is their country club,” said Commissioner Stuart.

As Dubsdread Golf Course embarks on its next century, city officials pledge to continue their support, ensuring it remains a priority for the city.
