FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – Drivers in Flagler Beach will soon have to adjust their speeds if they’re driving on certain roads in the city.
On Thursday, the city passed an ordinance that lowers city streets within Flagler Beach to 20 miles per hour citywide. The adoption does not include State Road A1A, State Road 100 along with John Anderson Highway and Roberts Road.

According to city officials, the change comes after the police chief and engineer presented findings to the city commission, pointing out that cars can go faster on some of the residential streets than they can on State Road A1A which runs 25 mph through a good chunk of the city. On one street west on South Central Boulevard, the speed is 30 mph and there are no sidewalks.

“Other than in the downtown portion of Flagler Beach, our city primarily has roadways without sidewalks,” said Police Chief Matt Doughney. “The reduction in the speed limit was approved by our city commission as a commitment to making our roadways a safe place to travel for all that live, work, and visit Flagler Beach.”
While the speed limit change becomes effective immediately, the city will need to update the signs before beginning enforcement.
