UP Orlando offers free sandbags to SoDo community. Here’s when to grab them

The handout will run through Sept. 27

ORLANDO, Fla. – United Against Poverty Orlando — also known as “UP Orlando” — is partnering with other local groups to bring free sandbags to local SoDo businesses and residents

The nonprofit’s center in Orlando was flooded earlier this month thanks to a series of heavy storms that swept through the region around that time.

Anjali Vaya, the executive director of UP Orlando, told News 6 that she got a call from the store manager about water coming into the building.

“I’m thinking, ‘Oh, darn it, it’s that roof, and they just completed the work...’” Vaya said. “He said the entire parking lot is starting to surge.’”

Following that incident, UP Orlando announced that it will be providing sandbags for other residents in the community who have been hit by severe flooding.

In a release, UP Orlando stated that the sandbags will be first-come, first-served as supplies last.

They’ll be handed out at 2894 Illiana Court between Sept. 19 and Sept. 21, as well as between Sept. 23 and Sept. 27. The handout will take place from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
