ORLANDO, Fla. – It’s an event aimed at strengthening the connection between mothers and daughters. Radio and Television host Monica May and her daughter, Monique are hosting a mother-daughter summit Saturday, September 28th at Valencia College West Campus from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event is free and open to the public for those who register.
This is not a new program. Monica says she and her daughter have been hosting teen summit’s with their mother’s for more than ten years now.
“It all started with a conversation me and my daughter, Monique had when she was 13 years old. We realized that it didn’t break us. We realized the difficult conversation brought us closer,” said Monica.
Through difficult and uncomfortable conversations with her daughter, they realized there was a need for programs to support the relationships between mothers and daughters. In 2013, they founded the nonprofit Let’s Spill the Tea. The events support girls and their mother’s during a critical time in their lives.
“Teenhood and girlhood is challenging no matter what age, range or experience and we’re grateful our story and message provides value to the community. We like to stand in our truth and share it with them hopefully to avoid some of the pitfalls and we want them to be empowered with resources,” said Monique.
The summit features engaging breakout sessions addressing topics ranging from confidence-building to teen dating, beauty tips to healthy conflict resolution and career building to financial planning.
“Giving parents the opportunity to unload their past really helps their daughter’s future. With ‘Let’s Spill the Tea,’ we give them space, we give them prompts and tabletop questions, guiding them through fun and exciting workshops. It gives them a chance to become closer,” said Monica.
Monique said the summit really helps both mothers and daughters better understand each other for a healthier relationship.
“We teach teens how to communicate with their mom better and understand her as a woman... A lot of times we see parents as an authoritative figure and not as humans. We take a step back to look at that relationship,” said Monique. “We teach moms to learn how to allow teens to share their experiences in a safe space. We’re advocates for mental wellness so we have licensed mental health counselors on site during the summit to assist.”
Monica and Monique say the experiences from the summit provide critical tools and resources families can utilize beyond the summit to enhance their bonds.
