Residents prepare for Hurricane Helene in Edgewater neighborhood

EDGEWATER, Fla. – Residents in the Florida Shores neighborhood of Edgewater spent Wednesday preparing for Hurricane Helene, hoping there isn’t too much flooding.

Standing at the end of Umbrella Tree Drive where a massive development is underway, a water pump was spotted. Residents expressed hope that the pump will help keep water from encroaching on their properties.

Homeowner Allison Roberts was busy getting her property ready.

“We are putting out sandbags. We experienced extreme flooding last week with the heavy rain here in Edgewater,” Roberts said.

Roberts has taken extra precautions to safeguard her property, including placing her antique furniture on cinder blocks.

On Wednesday, city crews were also seen clearing culverts in an attempt to prevent flooding. However, residents remain concerned about the overgrown vegetation in a nearby canal.

Edgewater Mayor Diezel Depew described the high demand for sandbags in the community.

“It’s been so busy all day today. The demand is like I’ve never seen it before,” Depew said.

The mayor spent the day helping fill sandbags for local residents and noted that they’ve delivered sandbags directly to around 100 homes, totaling 1,000 bags.

“The reaction from people when they find out they can get these sandbags delivered to their house is very emotional,” Depew said. “Most are very grateful and can’t do it themselves. Some even cry when they see you. They are just so happy to receive them.”

As homeowners brace for the storm, Roberts said she’s doing what she can while hoping for the best.

“Pray. That’s all I can do,” Roberts told News 6.
