Deltona residents brace for possible flooding ahead of Hurricane Milton

Water surrounded homes along Oneida Court after Hurricane Ian. Hurricane Nicole

DELTONA, Fla. – With Hurricane Milton approaching Central Florida, people living in some Deltona neighborhoods are preparing for the possibility of serious flooding.

In 2022, water surrounded homes along Oneida Court near Elkcam Boulevard after Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole.

In response to the flooding, the city has conducted a drainage study in some areas and has plans to raise a portion of Elkcam Boulevard by at least 2 feet.

The project, however, is still in the planning phase and people who live in the area have concerns the flooding situation could be repeated by Hurricane Milton.

“I don’t expect miracles, but I expect humans to do their effort on trying to better the area so we won’t have this again,” Carlos Romero said.

Several neighbors along Oneida Court spent the weekend buying supplies and placing sandbags around their homes.

Romero said he believes the plan to raise the road will help in the long term with flooding problems, but is focused on what will happen over the next few days.

“Right now it’s too late to do anything about it, but perhaps maybe after this hurricane and it’s still here that they will do something about it,” Romero said.

The entire project is expected to take a few years to complete.
