ORLANDO, Fla. – They are iconic symbols in downtown Orlando, and on Wednesday, the city welcomed two new swans to their group.

Central Florida residents David and Nicole Beyer donated two new Australian black swans to Lake Eola Park. They were named after the couple.

The generous gift aims to “diversify the park’s unique swan population and foster hopes of new life in the city’s beloved park,” city officials said in a news release.

The donation comes after the city’s swan population was hit multiple times this year. In February, two swans that were found dead tested positive for bird flu, and in July, a river otter was removed after two Australian black swans and one duck were found dead.

In August, the city welcomed six new swans to the park.

The birds were placed in a special acclimation area to help them transition smoothly alongside the park’s current residents.

Lake Eola Park is home to five distinct breeds of swan: trumpeter, black neck, whooper, royal mute, and Australian black swans.
