Toddler found dead in car at South Sumter Middle School parking lot

Deputies called to school around 4:18 p.m.

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A 15-month-old infant was found dead in the parking lot of South Sumter Middle School on Friday afternoon, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

In a release, deputies said the were called to the school around 4:18 p.m. after receiving a report about the dead child.

An investigation revealed that the child was unintentionally left in a car parked at the school, the release shows.

“The child was present with a family member and was to be dropped off at daycare,” the release reads. “However, the family member forgot the child was present and went to the school.”

An investigation is underway involving the Medical Examiner’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office, though no details were released about whether any charges could stem from this incident.

“This is a tragic situation and our hearts go out to the family of the child,” the sheriff’s office announced.
