VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A kangaroo on the lam in Florida was captured Wednesday morning in Volusia County, where it was spotted last month in the wild, according to officials.
The kangaroo, which escaped its enclosure after an incident with a bear, was found in a fenced-in area in Volusia, although the specific location was not disclosed.
A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer and the animal’s owner went to the location and captured the kangaroo, authorities said.
The kangaroo was “returned to its home after being bedded down in heavy cover,” according to the FWC.
Kangaroos are omnivores and eat plants, so they do not pose a threat to other species, however, they are strong and may defend themselves if they feel threatened, the FWC said.
The owner of this kangaroo was cited for:
- Expired Class 3 license over 1 year
- Improper caging
- Failure to notify FWC/report the escape within 12 hours
When the kangaroo escaped and was spotted Oct. 17 along a road in Pierson, Florida, Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a Facebook post, “Just when you think you’ve seen it all. Pierson is hopping tonight.”
Pierson is about 55 miles north of Orlando.
