ORLANDO, Fla. – Two Volusia County men were arrested Monday by the FBI on charges of assaulting several law enforcement officers during the Jan. 6 attack at the U.S. Capitol.

According to a Statement of Facts submitted in federal court, FBI investigators were tipped off by members of the public about the involvement of Jarod Lee Hawks, 43, of Port Orange, and John William Padgett, 40, of Edgewater.

According to the investigative document, video obtained from security cameras and members of the public showed both men being among the first to breach the perimeter of the U.S. Capitol on Jan 6, 2021.

Investigators said they used a large Trump sign as a battering ram to assault a group of law enforcement outside the Capitol.

The video also showed them kicking down barricades and injuring other officers with a metal pole, officials said.

Both men were expected to have an initial appearance before a federal magistrate on Tuesday at the federal courthouse in downtown Orlando.
