VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation has resumed construction on its critical buried seawall projects in Volusia and Flagler counties.

After a holiday break to accommodate heavy travel and celebrations, crews are back at work to strengthen the coast against erosion and storm damage.

Here’s what to expect:

North Wall (Highbridge Road in Volusia County to South Central Avenue in Flagler County)

  • Current Work: Two drilling rigs are installing concrete piles for the seawall, while crews build the concrete cap and regrade the dunes.
  • Upcoming Milestones:
    • Reconstruction of beach walkovers will begin late January.
    • Dune vegetation planting is set for late January or early February.
  • Timeline:
    • Flagler County section: Spring 2025.
    • Volusia County section: Fall 2025.

Traffic Impact: Expect occasional single-lane closures with flagging operations.

South Wall (Sunrise Avenue to Marlin Drive in Ormond-by-the-Sea, Volusia County)

  • Current Work: A third drill rig is speeding up progress. Crews are clearing old rock and expanding work areas before drilling begins.
  • Timeline: Work progresses from north to south, with completion expected in early 2026.
