News 6 meteorologist discusses Central Florida cold weather punch

30s could come midweek with 10-20 mph wind gusts

ORLANDO, Fla. – With the incoming cold weather blast, we spoke with a News 6 meteorologist about what Central Floridians can expect and how people should prepare.

News 6 Meteorologist David Nazario said temperatures won’t drop too heftily.

“I know social media has been hammering home that same, ‘19 degrees in Orlando! Snow flurries!’ No, we’re not going to get that cold,” Nazario said.

Layering up will be important over the next week or so. Nazario said Central Floridians should keep the wind chill in mind because that’s what it’ll make it feel like it’s really cold outside.

“Let’s say it’s 35 to start the day on Wednesday or Thursday if we have anywhere between 10 to 20 mile an hour gusts, that temperature can definitely feel like it’s below freezing,” Nazario said. “That’s why you want to make sure that, you know, for men and women, tank tops, undergarments, T-shirts, long sleeves, then your coat, maybe a beanie or a nice hat, a scarf if you want to go to that level.”

Nazario said it’s possible some parts of Central Florida could see frost.

“Gainesville and Ocala have been under the microscope a lot for those frost/freeze advisories,” Nazario said. “We’ll have to wait and see how much mositure and humidity is still around to maybe get some of that frost going here in Central Florida.”

As far as how you should prepare, Nazario has a couple of suggestions.

“I think that the plants, your lawns, your gardens, agriculture, maybe the livestock are really going to be the ones that we need to pay attention to, not so much the homes, the pipes, etc.,” Nazario said.
