Accused drunk driver plows onto runway at Daytona Beach airport, tries to get into locked plane

Incident happened shortly before 4:30 p.m., sheriff’s office says

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A driver is in custody after he crashed he vehicle onto the airfield at Daytona Beach International Airport on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

In a release, deputies said the incident happened shortly before 4:30 p.m., when a Ford Mustang sped through a gate at the airport’s international terminal.

According to airport officials, the suspect — later identified as Bryan Parker, 58, of Holly Hill — drove his vehicle onto an active taxiway and through an active runway, nearly striking an Embry-Riddle plane that was taxiing.

“The driver, an adult male who was highly intoxicated, approached an occupied, running airplane and attempted to make entry,” the release reads. “He was unable to enter the locked plane.”

Afterward, he approached two other unoccupied planes and managed to briefly get into one before he was interrupted by airport operations staff and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University security, deputies noted.

According to investigators, an airport operations technician had pulled Parker from the plane and sat him on his truck’s tailgate, though he soon jumped off and ran toward another plane before once again being apprehended.

Overall, the incident happened in around 30 seconds, airport officials added.

Now, Parker is in custody and being interviewed, the VSO reported. He is facing multiple charges.

“Parker indicated he was intoxicated on alcohol and drugs and didn’t remember what led to the incident,” the release continues.

Meanwhile, the airport’s operations are continuing without disruption as the investigation continues, deputies said.
