ORLANDO, Fla. – Lawyers for a man convicted of killing a woman in Orlando more than 20 years ago had their chance to try to convince a judge not to send him to death row.
Demorris Hunter, 59, was convicted earlier this year of strangling Theresa Green during a gathering at her Orlando home in 2002. A jury has already recommended the death penalty.

On Monday, the judge asked both sides to submit their sentencing recommendations by July 1. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Aug. 4.
Hunter’s attorneys are arguing against the death sentence. Prosecutors are making the case for it.
Hunter was already behind bars when the Orlando case moved forward.
He is serving a 110-year sentence for the murder of another woman in California in 2005.
