Pilot emerges unscathed when plane crashes into Tampa Bay

FAA to investigate crash

TAMPA, Fla. – The pilot of a small plane emerged unscathed after the aircraft crashed into Tampa Bay moments after takeoff, police said.

Tampa police said in news release Sunday that the Piper aircraft lost power shortly after departing an airport on Davis Islands near Tampa. The pilot was able to escape uninjured before the plane sank and was rescued by passing boaters. The pilot's identity was not immediately released.

Authorities say no one else was on board.

Police marine and diver units are now working to recover the airplane.

The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the cause of the crash.
