FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis held a news conference Thursday morning at a wine shop in Fort Lauderdale, where he signed a bill upping the maximum size of wine bottles allowed to be sold in-state.
HB 583 — “Individual Wine Containers” — is a one-page bill that amends Section 564.05 of Florida’s statutes to allow the sale of wine in glass containers holding 4.5, 6, 9, 12 or 15 liters, colloquially known as Rehoboam, Methuselah, Salmanazar, Balthazar and Nebuchadnezzar bottles in that order.

“We’re here today to talk about wine,” DeSantis said, the phrase “carpe vinum” taped to his lectern. “... What they were able to do in the legislature is look at laws in the state of Florida that were just anachronistic, that were not good for businesses like this and not good for Florida consumers. (...) If you have a wedding, if you have a special celebration, there’s definitely things to do.”
The bill will take effect on July 1.
