Florida tax package includes Freedom Month, multiple holidays, savings on insurance premiums

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Floridians will see tax relief in various areas throughout the next few months, including savings in homeowners or flood insurance premiums.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed HB 7073 on Tuesday at Gator’s Portside Port Canaveral, alongside Florida Department of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie.

Part of the tax package includes the following:

  • 14-day “back-to-school” tax holiday for certain clothing and school supplies; runs from July 29-Aug. 11.
  • Two, 14-day “disaster preparedness” tax holidays for specified supplies; runs from June 1-14 and Aug. 24-Sept. 6.
  • A “Freedom Month” tax holiday for specified recreational items/activities; runs from July 1-31.
  • A seven-day “tool time” tax holiday for certain tools; runs from Sept. 1-7.
  • One-year exemption on taxes for residential property and flood insurance policies.

“So this is a very, very substantial package. This is something that’s going to make a difference for a lot of Floridians. We’re excited to be able to do it,” DeSantis said prior to the bill signing.

Guthrie talked about the importance of preparation ahead of the start of hurricane season but emphasized making a plan for your family.

“Right now is the best time to finalize your preparedness plans, identify what you need for your kit and then take advantage of the tax holiday June 1 through 14th,” he said.

This bill signing comes after DeSantis on Monday signed 16 more bills into law, including one centering on highway racing.
