Renaissance Charter School students sent home after suspicious incident

Man's body found in car near school, police say

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando police investigated a suspicious incident Tuesday morning near Renaissance Charter School on Goldenrod Road.

Officers found a man inside a vehicle who they said might have committed suicide, according to Orlando police.

Orlando police are searched the school and surrounding areas out of an abundance of caution, police said.

Nothing was found.

News 6 spoke to parents picking up their children from the school after the incident.

"Right now, there's a lot of crazy stuff happening in Orlando, so I worried about my daughter," Elinder Salbador said.

Mother Franyenis Feliberty said her husband saw police activity at the school when he dropped their daughter off Tuesday morning. Feliberty said she doesn't understand why the school didn't cancel class sooner, rather than making parents come back just two hours later.

"That's my question, like, why are they going to make us drop off our kids if they knew something was wrong? I mean, if we were here already, just tell us to take the kids so they don't have to go through all of this," she said.

The school released a statement Tuesday afternoon:

"Our hearts are broken for the events that occurred today at our school. This is not something that anyone should have to go through or experience. We are so proud of our entire school family and thankful for their tremendous efforts acting in the most appropriate way possible given the circumstances. We contacted police within two minutes of discovering a scene that none of us could have been prepared to address. We redirected students as quickly as we could with minimal exposure and contacted families as soon as we were able. Although students were never in any danger, police requested we evacuate the school in an abundance of caution and gave us clear direction throughout the process. We are grateful to the City of Orlando Police Department for their guidance throughout. We deeply appreciate everyone’s support as we do our very best to help our faculty, students and parents through this. School will be open tomorrow."

Orlando police said the person in the car was a white male in his 40s. Authorities have not released his identify or the cause of his death as of Tuesday evening.
