ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Richard Albert rolled his old round trash can to the curb right after the New Year. That's where it has sat ever since.
"According to what the man told me last Friday, it wasn't in the proper container," said Albert. "But you don't have the proper container? No I don't. I called the county twice and asked for it."
Albert said he began calling Orange County's Solid Waste division back in October when the rest of his neighbors began receiving their new rectangular 95-gallon rolling bins, one for trash and one for recycling.
"I called them and asked why didn't I receive the bins, they said my number hasn't come up yet," said Albert.
Albert's neighbor, Sandra Johnson, has been calling too. She's the only other homeowner on 40th street who didn't get the new trash bins.
"They told me the same thing," said Johnson. "Your name is on the list and they should be coming. But they never came."
A district manager for Orange County's Solid Waste division acknowledged that Albert was on the list to receive new bins but that his request was only received Jan. 4, not back in October.
News 6 contacted Orange County Tuesday morning and hours later 2 new bins were delivered to Albert's driveway.
"I got results!" said Albert. "At least someone came out, I had to call you all. Channel 6 gets results. Thank you. I appreciate that."
Orange County's Solid Waste division has been struggling with the automatic-arm pickup system changeover that went into effect Jan. 1. Over the past few weeks, homeowners complained that their trash wasn't picked up for days and some, like Albert and Johnson, said their new bins never came.
Orange County's public information officer said haulers are backlogged.
"They are trying to catch up, but they've had some issues with some people getting the new roll carts," said Doreen Overstreet.
Overstreet suggested that any residents with concerns email solid waste at Solid.Waste@ocfl.net.
After News 6 got involved, Johnson was promised her new bins would be delivered as soon as they are in stock.
"Wonderful! I want to hug you!" Johnson told News 6's Erik von Ancken. "Thank you, thank you!!! Thank you so much!"
