Unclaimed property up for auction Saturday in Orlando

Jewelry, rare coins among lot

ORLANDO, Fla. – Jewelers, collectors, and people simply looking for a good deal are all expected to crowd the State of Florida Unclaimed Property Auction.

The event draws people from all across the state to bid on unclaimed items, such as rare coins, expensive jewelry, collector's cards, and other items. The items come from bank safety deposit boxes that were turned over to the state, and the things inside have gone unclaimed for five or more years.

Prices range from a starting bid of $19,000 for diamonds worth $100,000 to much lower-cost items. Money raised is held by the state indefinitely, until it is claimed by the owner or next of kin.

“I guarantee you, if you're under the sound of my voice you'll find a utility deposit, an uncashed paycheck, insurance proceeds, you name it, cable deposits,” State CFO Jimmy Patronis said.

The live auction will be held at 10 a.m. at the Florida Hotel on Sand Lake Road. There is a $100 buy in and registration opens at 8 a.m.
