October Is The New September In 2024

Tropics Watch update for 9/30

No description found

Ugh. Meteorologist Jonathan Kegges back with you for another edition of the Tropics Watch newsletter.

We knew we were playing with fire. Helene was catastrophic for multiple states from Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, and Virginia. What’s going on in the mountains of North Carolina is horrific. Towns have been washed away from nearly two feet of rain falling in the mountains.

Unfortunately, there is still a lot of the season to go.

Prior to the season, we chose to use the word ‘impactful’ versus explosive. It looked as if these storms would impact land at a much higher clip than last season. There could have been even more of this in August if it hadn’t been for a few atmospheric phenomena keeping a lid on the hurricane season. Those limiting factors are all going away at once and it appears the forecasts of a backloaded season are going to verify.

Do me this favor. Be careful where you get your weather information. Too often last week people on social media, that are not experts, went back and forth on if a storm would even develop. Some incorrectly favored model runs that were never going to pan out in terms of where the storm would make landfall and move inland.

There was plenty warning that Helene would be catastrophic, especially for the mountains of North Carolina and the surge on Florida’s Gulf Coast. I fear though that a lot of people that get their info from the internet received terrible information.

We’ll break down the tropics LIVE on News 6+ and our YouTube channel Monday night at 8 p.m. ET.

See you then!

Jonathan

There is a lot of noise out there when it comes to the weather. A lot of hype, a lot of clickbait etc. You have my word that you will never see any of those scare tactics from me and News 6. Seeing this myself makes my blood boil.

We’re going to talk about a lot of stuff (hopefully while everything remains out at sea), but we will do so with sound science and meteorology.

It is my hope to have a conversation about the weather this season and to my pass along everything I know so that you know what to look out for.

You can expect an e-mail from me every Monday (and as needed) during hurricane season. If it’s quiet, we’re going to talk about it. If there’s something going on out there, we’re definitely going to be talking about it. We also have a live tropics show that airs on our YouTube channel every Monday at 8p.m. and News 6+
