DeLAND, Fla. – Stetson University held what school leaders call a "celebration of life" to honor the football player who died earlier this week.
Nick Blakely collapsed on the field during the team's practice late Monday. The 19-year-old sophomore defensive back was later pronounced dead.
While investigators haven't determined exactly what caused Blakely's death, coach Roger Hughes said Monday's practice was light and didn't involve any hitting. School officials say Blakely complained of feeling ill and appeared to have a seizure after collapsing.
Thursday's memorial started at 7 p.m., at Lee Chapel on Woodland Blvd. in DeLand. His funeral is set for next Wednesday in Blakely's home state of Georgia.
