TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Former Florida State University quarterback Marcus Outzen died in Tampa last week at the age of 46, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.
The outlet reports that Outzen — dubbed “The Rooster” thanks to his red hair and “fiery demeanor” — passed away on April 30 due to complications associated with an immune deficiency disorder.

Outzen had previously been diagnosed with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), which is a rare disease that makes certain white blood cells attack other blood cells, according to John Hopkins Medicine.
While the disease usually manifests in young children, it can sometimes pop up in adults — as was Outzen’s case.

The former quarterback played at FSU from 1996-2000, and he rose to stardom after leading the Seminoles to victory over Wake Forest and Florida, helping the team advance to the BCS Championship in Arizona.
“Marcus’ legacy is not only in his achievements but in the love he shared and the lives he touched,” said Brad Dempton, Outzen’s best friend and college roommate. “Indeed, the loved them deeply in return. Throughout his life, Marcus cultivated a vast circle of friends who admired his genuine care and the respect he showed to all.”
Outzen also worked in medical sales professionally, living in the Tampa Bay area with his wife and children.
