Orlando Pride earns point in inaugural NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup match

The Orlando Pride earned a point against the North Carolina Courage on Saturday evening in their first match in the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup.

The match ended in a tie, but went to penalties which North Carolina won 5-4. The Courage earned two points.

The tournament features all 14 teams from the NWSL and the top six teams from LIGA MX Femenil, the highest division of women’s football in Mexico.

Courage forward Manaka Matsukubo got on the board first in the 45th minute with Orlando’s Celia Jiménez equalizing in the 82nd minute.

The Pride will entered tournament play with eight players away on international duty. Seven of those players are representing their respective countries in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 33-match tournament Summer Cup consists of 30 group stage contests followed by a four-team semifinal round on August 6. The championship match will be played on Friday, October 25.

Orlando returns to their regular NWSL schedule on Aug. 23.
