VERO BEACH, Fla. – While the Tour de Turtles is an annual win for sea turtle conservation, this year, Disney has something more to “shell”-ebrate.
For the past 17 years, Disney has taken part in Sea Turtle Conservancy’s (STC) educational event that follows the migration of sea turtles from their nesting beaches to their feeding grounds. Hitched with satellite transponders on their shells, each sea turtle pings back data showing just how far they swim during the migration season.
This year, Disney tracked two new nesting sea turtles, and Ebb — Disney Conservation’s sponsored turtle — has won the race.
Ebb was released on July 27 to kick off the race and has swam over 1,100 miles from the coast of Disney’s Vero Beach Resort.
Ebb is the first Disney-sponsored turtle ever to take the gold. Her fellow tourmate Flo — sponsored by Disney Cruise Line — is also making waves swimming over 700 miles.
