More than 647,000 Florida voters switched their political party affiliation in the two years leading up to this week’s general election, state voter registration records analyzed by News 6 show. Although more than 95% of Florida’s 14.4 million registered voters have maintained the same political party affiliation since October 2020, some independent voters have committed to a political party while other voters have changed their registration from one party to another. More than 72,000 voters who were registered as Republicans in 2018 now identify themselves as Democrats, state records show. ORLANDO, Fla. – Grammy-Award winning singer and songwriter John Legend is paying attention to Florida politics, specifically several upcoming elections for local state attorney seats. The current Orlando-area state attorney Aramis Ayala said last year she would not be seeking re-election. Worrell, former chief judge of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Belvin Perry; current assistant state attorney in Orange-Osceola Deborah Barra and Ryan Williams, a longtime assistant state attorney in Florida’s 9th and 5th Judicial Circuits, have all announced they are running. Worrell, a criminal justice attorney, faces the three other candidates in the Aug. 18 Democratic primary. The goal of the political group is to “elect prosecutors who will fix our broken criminal justice system,” according to its website.

This week a federal appeals court judge granted Gov. Ron DeSantis motion to review a judges May ruling that determined the requirement for Floridians to pay all court costs and fees prior to being able to vote unconstitutional. A group of Florida residents impacted by this decision sued the state, along with the attorneys from the American Civil Liberties Foundation and the NAACP, among other voting rights groups. In May, a federal judge ruled that Florida law cant stop an estimated 774,000 disenfranchised felons from voting because they cant pay back any legal fees and restitution they owe. Circuit Court of Appeals, requesting a stay of Hinkles ruling and a review of the case by the full appeals court.
