When the officer approached the individuals, a scuffle broke out, according to sheriff’s officials. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says the assailants ran over the officer as they fled the scene. Rodrigo Alberto Mato La Rosa was apprehended in South Florida and also faces a charge of attempted murder on a law enforcement officer.

The crash occurred in the 600 block of Castanada Street, a short residential street northeast of the intersection of Malabar Road and Jupiter Boulevard. The adult and child were riding on the ATV when it appears to have struck a ditch on the side of the road, Leggett said.

A 26-year-old female was ejected from the ATV as a result of the crash and was taken to a hospital where she later died. The driver of the ATV, a 57-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, troopers said.
