Read full article: HHS leaders: No evidence of child abuse surge amid pandemic(AP Photo/Wilfredo Lee)NEW YORK – Top officials overseeing child welfare at the Department of Health and Human Services say they’ve seen no solid evidence to bear out warnings that serious forms of child abuse would surge during the coronavirus pandemic. Back in March, when COVID-19 forced schools to close and many children to be locked down in households buffeted by job losses, many child-welfare experts warned of a likely surge of child abuse perpetrated by harried parents and other caretakers. Johnson and Milner said many parents indeed have faced pandemic-related stresses, but questioned whether that fueled abuse. “We can’t just assume because parents have to spend 24/7 with their kids, that there’s going to be more abuse,” she said. Among the notable findings in the new report for 2019: The number of child fatalities due to child abuse and neglect increased to 1,840, up from 1,780 in 2018.
