Construction has officially begun on the iconic Flagler Beach pier, marking the start of a major rebuilding effort after the structure took significant damage from hurricanes over the past decade.

As Flagler County continues to assess the damage done by Hurricane Ian, road closures are in effect in Flagler Beach as crews deal with road depressions and main breaks in the area.

The threat is near the Flagler Beach Pier, deputies said.

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – The Flagler Beach City Hall and Building Department closed temporarily Friday after the interim city manager tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Interim City Manager Rick McFadden announced in a news release that he learned Thursday he had tested positive for the highly contagious virus. The interim city manager has spent time in both buildings recently, he said. City staff will be working remotely. To reach staff members while the facilities are closed, community members can call 386-517-2000 for city hall and leave a message.

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – The City of Flagler Beach has announced that the Flagler Beach Pier’s operating hours will be extended. “Upon our review of the Pier since it was re-opened on June 5, 2020, we’re pleased to announce that we’re extending the hours,” officials said. City officials had originally said the pier will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.

FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. Jeff Godfrey had a successful day fishing at the Flagler Beach Pier. It's just been a great day for morale and everything," said Godfrey. We can have up to 100 plus people on the pier, said Al LaMonica, owner of Big Als Bait & Tackle. LaMonica said just having the pier back open will not only help his shop but others as well. So, its just a win win for everybody, said LaMonica.

Beginning Friday, the Flagler Beach Pier will reopen for the first time since March after closing due to the coronavirus. City officials made the call to reopen the pier as Florida will enter phase two of Gov. Ron DeSantis plan to reopen the state amid the pandemic on Friday. The picnic tables on the boardwalk will also reopen Friday along with the pier bait shop, according to a news release. The bait shop will be take-out only.
