Pitt beat out an iconic group that included Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino. In earlier speeches, Pitt joked about DiCaprio and director Quentin Tarantino, and via Robbie zinged Brexit and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's departure from their royal roles in Britain. Pitt's ex-wife, Angelina Jolie, won a supporting-actress Oscar in 1999 — years before she and Pitt got together. Pitt was the only man in the category who had never won an acting Oscar.

True to his reputation, Gervais opened the show on Sunday with a mix of evisceration and exasperation, pretending to confuse Joe Pesci for Baby Yoda, calling the Hollywood Foreign Press Association racist and declaring Netflix's takeover of Hollywood. He made fun of Felicity Huffman for her prison sentence in a college exam cheating scandal, saying she made the license plate on his limo. Few in the audience should have been surprised by Gervais' tone: He's taken delight in dicing up the Hollywood elite with his jokes with his previous hosting stints.

The New York critics additionally bestowed best supporting actor on Joe Pesci's performance in the film. The New York critics last year chose another Netflix title, Alfonso Cuaron's “Roma," as its best film. The New York Film Critics Circle, founded in 1935, will hand out the awards for their 85th ceremony on Jan. 7.
