During the news conference leaders explained that even with children back in school, positive cases have not spiked. In Volusia County there are approximately 14 students who have tested positive for the coronavirus. Volusia County saw an increase in deaths Friday, reporting two additional deaths. Since March, 205 people have died in Volusia County after complications from COVID-19.

On Thursday, Volusia County Schools announced the district will not start fall sports practices on July 27. The district is working with the Volusia County Department of Health and state officials on a start date.

As of Friday, the Florida Department of Health reported there have been 864 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in the county. There have been 46 COVID-19 deaths in Volusia County, 30 of those deaths have been residents or staff at long term care facilities, officials said. According to Patricia Boswell, Administrator, Florida Department of Health in Volusia County, the reason Floridians are seeing a spike in positive cases is because of increased testing. “Currently, Volusia County’s positivity rate over the past 14 days is 2.29%, a slight decrease from last week,” Boswell said.
