A president of a Central Florida college steps down.

SUMTERVILLE, Fla. – The first vaccine pod in Florida to offer the newly approved, single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine opened up in Sumter County on Wednesday. Ron DeSantis made the announcement at Lake-Sumter State College’s Sumter Campus, which was already serving as a vaccination site. “They (Sumter County) have the highest percentage of seniors, of any county in the state of Florida -- 58% of all the residents of Sumter are 65 or older,” DeSantis said. “We’ve done a majority of the seniors in Sumter.”This new vaccine pod will offer up to 1,000 J&J vaccinations a day for the next three days, according to the governor. This new vaccine pod comes as the state gets ready to expand its age eligibility requirements on Monday to include any Floridians who are 60 or older.

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – The vaccination site that was located on Wedgewood Lane in The Villages has moved to Lake-Sumter State College. AdLake-Sumter State College, located on 1423 CR 526A, is 16 miles away from Wedgewood Lane which may not be convenient for some seniors. “Global Medical Response is now vaccinating at Lake Sumter College, Sumterville Campus. This is a mobile vaccination site we are prepared to move when necessary. Appointment times will not be interrupted; however, the location may change over the coming months from time-to-time,” Global Medical Response said in a statement to News 6.

LEESBURG, Fla. – Lake County leaders say their first appointment-based vaccine clinic is improving by the hour. Thursday was the second day for the county-run vaccine clinic at Lake-Sumter State College in Leesburg. The county opened up appointments for the vaccine clinic on Tuesday and every slot filled within minutes, according to Lake County Commissioner Sean Parks. | Fifth-largest lotto jackpot up for grabs]This vaccination site filled 652 appointments per day, according to Thomas Carpenter, the county director of emergency management. He said workers at the vaccination site are trying to fill those vacancies in real-time.
