As California’s massive wildfires burn, thousands of GoFundMe campaigns for victims have become an outlet for onlookers transfixed by the blazes and eager to do something to help.

Officials found “heavy, heavy damage” in parts of the city’s historic district, Newnan Fire Chief Stephen Brown told a news conference. One of the victims in the hard-hit town of Ohatchee, a small community of about 1,170 people in eastern Alabama, was Dwight Jennings' neighbor.
