Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue said Elijah Rashad Thomas disappeared in the surf near 1024 N. Atlantic Ave. by the Hampton Inn. His body was found Sunday night, about 9 miles north of where he vanished, according to Tammy Malphurs, of Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue. Malphurs said Thomas was swimming with his family in an unguarded area off Daytona Beach when they got caught in a rip current. Then-Hurricane Epsilon, although far from Florida, created high surf and strong rip currents along the Florida coast.

Beach rescue officials said the boy, who is from Lake Wales, was standing in waist-deep water when the shark bit his foot. Beach safety officials said the incident marked the third shark bite reported in Volusia County this year. New Smyrna Beach is unofficially known as the shark attack capital of the world, according to CNN. According to Florida Museum’s International Shark Attack File, there have been 312 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks in Volusia County since 1882.
