PALATKA, Fla. A small Florida county will move its monument honoring Confederate soldiers from its spot in front of the courthouse. The Putnam County Commission voted 4-1 Tuesday to move the statue, using private donations, but did not decide when or where it will be moved. The monument consists of a Confederate soldier standing with a rifle atop a an approximately 20-foot (6-meter) granite base. The statue is in the county seat Palatka its population is 43% Black. This monument has been here for a long time and not caused a problem.The decision came weeks after nearby St. Augustine also voted to move its Confederate memorial.

MARION COUNTY – A 59-year-old woman died in a Marion County crash Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Brenda Ortman of Palatka died after the car she was driving westbound on County Road 318 crossed the center line and collided with another vehicle driving eastbound, troopers said. Ortman was taken to a hospital, where she later was pronounced deceased, according to troopers. The driver of the other vehicle didn’t suffer any injuries, troopers said.

PALATKA, Fla. – A man walking along a Florida highway was killed in a crash involving a garbage truck, according to state troopers. Eric Edenfield, 32, of Palatka, died Thursday morning along U.S. 17 in Putnam County, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The garbage truck hit Edenfield from behind, but it’s unclear whether the truck driver will be charged, according to officials. Waste Pro USA Senior Vice President Ron Pecora said in a statement that the company is cooperating with law enforcement, The Florida Times-Union reported. “It would be inappropriate to comment further on what is an ongoing investigation,” the statement said.
