Barra also sits on Ayalas death penalty review panel, a group of prosecutors who decide whether the death penalty is appropriate in a first-degree murder case. ORLANDO, Fla. – Grammy-Award winning singer and songwriter John Legend is paying attention to Florida politics, specifically several upcoming elections for local state attorney seats. The current Orlando-area state attorney Aramis Ayala said last year she would not be seeking re-election. Worrell, former chief judge of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Belvin Perry; current assistant state attorney in Orange-Osceola Deborah Barra and Ryan Williams, a longtime assistant state attorney in Florida’s 9th and 5th Judicial Circuits, have all announced they are running. Worrell, a criminal justice attorney, faces the three other candidates in the Aug. 18 Democratic primary. The goal of the political group is to “elect prosecutors who will fix our broken criminal justice system,” according to its website.
Markeith Loyd files motion to have prosecutor removed
ORLANDO, Fla. Attorneys for convicted killer Markeith Loyd have filed a motion in court asking for the removal of prosecutor Ryan Williams from his second murder trial. Loyd is accused of killing Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton in 2017, while investigators were looking for him in connection with the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon. The motion was filed Monday and cites a conflict of interest between Williams and State Attorney Brad King. Loyd was convicted last year for the murder of Dixon. Loyds trial in the Clayton case was scheduled to begin in May but was postponed.
Judge denies Everett Miller’s attorneys motion to dismiss death penalty
OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – A court hearing was held Friday morning to discuss new motions presented by Everett Miller’s attorneys after he was convicted of first-degree murder. The defense presented motions to set aside the jury’s death recommendation, set a new trial and interview the jurors. During the hearing, the judge denied the defense’s request to set aside the death recommendation and receive a new trial. "The court is going to deny the record for a death recommendation and the motion for a new trial." The court also denied defense’s requests to interview jurors, after the court believed there was no evidence that jurors were being bullied during the deliberating process.
