Drivers will soon be able to hit the gas pedal a little more along a portion of State Road 408 in Orange County. During a meeting Thursday, Central Florida Expressway Authority board members voted unanimously to increase the speed limit from 55 to 60 mph along State Road 408, between Kirkman Road and Chickasaw Trail. Engineers said State Road 408 is nearly 50 years old, and that increasing the speed limit even more would require costly construction and changes to the roadway. With the board’s approval of the speed limit change, 55 new signs will be created costing about $125,000.

The shooting was reported around 7:25 p.m. at the Highpoint Club Apartments off Rouse Road between Colonial Drive and State Road 408. Orlando police officers doused the flames and tended to the woman, who was on fire, officials said. Orlando firefighters then took over rescue efforts, but the woman died at the scene, according to authorities. Officials said a suspicious death investigation has been launched. Police said the woman’s death is not being investigated as a homicide and there’s no danger to the community.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Drivers who usually take eastbound State Road 408 to Orange Avenue will need to use a detour for the next six months starting Monday. The closure will take place so crews can demolish the existing ramp and build a new one that will accommodate for a wider State Road 408 East. “To access Orange Avenue, motorists will need to use the exit to Mills Avenue (Exit 11B), where tolls will be suspended for the duration of the closure. A nonsignalized U-turn will be created on Mills Avenue under S.R. 408, allowing motorists to then enter South Street toward downtown Orlando,” the Florida Department of Transportation wrote on a web page announcing the closure.
