MARION COUNTY, Fla. – Republican Kat Cammack has won Florida’s U.S. House seat held by her former boss, retiring Florida Republican Rep. Ted Yoho. Cammack owns a political consulting firm and previously served as Yoho’s deputy chief of staff and campaign manager. Yoho is leaving Congress after four terms to fulfill a campaign promise to self-impose term limits. Cammack won the August primary with 25% of the vote in a 10-way race. Cammack was the deputy chief of staff and campaign manager for Yoho from 2012-2020.

Cammack won in a Republican field of 10 candidates in the firmly Republican district that runs from Ocala to just south of Jacksonville. In Broward County, Sheriff Gregory Tony claimed victory in the Democratic primary over his predecessor, who was fired after the Parkland massacre. In a Palm Beach County congressional district, far right conservative Laura Loomer won the Republican primary to face Democratic U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel. As of June 30, Florida had nearly 4.9 million active Republican voters and more than 5.1 million active Democratic voters. The state has nearly 3.8 million voters who either are not registered with a party or are registered with a minor party.

Polls opened at 7 a.m. Tuesday for Floridas Primary Election and they wont close until 7 p.m. local time. Florida is a closed primary state, meaning voters can only cast ballots for candidates running for the party in which they are registered. Its Primary Day and election workers are preparing to open the polls for in-person voting during a pandemic. She said she registered to vote the first chance she could and has voted in every election since, usually being in line when polls open on Election Day. Florida has no statewide races on the 2020 ballot and voters are voting by mail in larger numbers, likely because of the coronavirus pandemic. Incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Ross Spano is facing a primary challenge from Lakeland City Commissioner Scott Franklin. Republican U.S. Rep. Bill Posey is also facing a primary opponent in District 8, located on Florida's Space Coast. The vote by mail totals far exceed the 2016 primary, when fewer than 1.3 million people voted by mail, and ballots will continue to arrive at election offices through Tuesday. The state has nearly 3.8 million voters who either are not registered with a party or are registered with a minor party.

Democrats in the district will choose from Adam Christensen, Phillip Dodds and Tom Wells in their primary. His campaign motto is for the many, not just me, and his top three issues are health care, the environment and big money in politics. Christensen said he believes health care is a human right and Medicare for All should be permanent. Dodds top three issues are building a trustworthy government, making the economy work for everyone and health care. And he thinks health care coverage should cost less and go with the user when they change or lose their job.

Ocasio-Cortez rejected her colleague's words, saying they were not an apology and what she heard was a vulgar slur. I rise to apologize for the abrupt manner of the conversation I had with my colleague from New York, Yoho said of Monday's encounter. I will not teach my nieces and young people watching that this an apology, and what they should learn to accept. I hope that Mr. Yoho feels that apology sincerely," Hoyer said.

The comments by Yoho were despicable and unacceptable" and require an apology on the House floor, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., told reporters.
