Dylan Wafer, 17, a student in Broward, recently helped to rescue dozens of animals from a crowded barn. POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A South Florida high school student helped rescue 260 rabbits and guinea pigs when she heard about their plight. The Sun-Sentinel reported that Dylan Warfel, a Pompano Beach senior, began a massive coordination effort to rescue dozens of the animals and find them new homes. In a matter of days, she’d found homes for the majority of the 260 rabbits and guinea pigs. It’s impressive.”Warfel herself took 21 rabbits and guinea pigs from Alva and wants to find them homes.

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – News 6 often gets phone calls and messages into the newsroom about people struggling to get the vaccine. Ormond Beach Commissioner Dwight Selby secured an appointment to get the vaccine and decided to pass it along to someone else. “It just felt right in my heart that this was the person to pass on my appointment to,” said Selby. While Volusia County’s health department allows a transfer of appointment through its registration platform, some county’s like Flagler do not. If you want to explore this option you need to ask your local health department, or agency offering the vaccine if they’ll allow a transfer.

Both women added it was difficult to go back to the beach after that terrifying experience. While Hopkins was floating face down in the water, he said another woman by the name of Gabriella, encountered his body. We didn’t know what we were going to find when we turned him over. When asked if the two nurses gave him a second chance at life, Hopkins didn’t hesitate to say he’s alive because of them. It really was the selflessness, the determination, the resolve of these two fine nurses that were responsible for saving my life.”

While the officers were inside, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer was outside dressed as Santa for the morning, raising money for the Boys & Girls Club on the radio. Academy Sports also donated some equipment to the Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida and presented them with $1,000, a gifts they hope will help support local kids through after school programming and mentorship.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The spirit of Christmas came alive during the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree distribution day at the Joy Center in Orlando on Wednesday. This year the annual event meant more to some because of economic hardships tied to the coronavirus pandemic. Thousands of families and seniors will receive gifts thanks to the kindness of the Central Florida community. When I first came to Florida, I had nothing, and so Salvation Army helped me. “Our biggest challenge is re-training everyone even me,” Captain Jessie Chapman, commander for the Orlando Salvation Army said.

Fortunately, thanks to the help from his Sanford community, the holiday season will be a little less stressful than Aaron Butler initially thought. Natasha Trythall, who works in human resources for Advanced Composite Structures, explained the need for the community to pitch in to keep the fund going. Now that Butler and his girls are adjusting to a new life, he’s thankful for having his Sanford community. The annual program started last month with the goal of adopting 5,000 angels, including 4,000 children from infants to 14 year olds, in Orange and Osceola counties. The other 1,000 angels are seniors who might not have a Christmas if it were not for donations. By 8 p.m., News 6 viewers had donated $187,000, and after adding in online donations, the number increased to $211,478. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Magic of Lights at the Daytona International Speedway transformed into a community wide food drop Wednesday morning for hundreds of people like Elena D’Andelet who need groceries. This was McKain’s first time to be in a food drop line. Jamie Hartsgrove who is the Outreach Director of Daytona Dream Center said the need for food has not slowed down. Wednesday’s food drop was the 14th one since March. Daytona Dream Center teamed up with Calvary Christian Center and Second Harvest Food Bank to distribute 32,000 pounds of food Wednesday morning.

Retired NBA player and Magic community ambassador Bo Outlaw and his family were also a part of the event Thursday morning. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One Florida couple found some important items belonging to a World War II veteran and vowed to get them to their family member if possible, News 6 partner News4Jax reports. “I found the flag; she found the family,” Lloyd Hyatt said of his wife, Melissa. Lloyd Hyatt, a veteran himself, knew the flag was oddly placed and didn’t belong in that shop. Melissa Hyatt reached out to several of Smith’s family members via Facebook to try and connect with them to get the items to their rightful owners. And we were so glad that didn’t happen,” Lloyd Hyatt said.

MAITLAND, Fla. – Chris Nikic, 21, is inspiring others to try 1% more each day. “It represents me better than I was yesterday,” Chris Nikic said about what that 1% he had printed on his orange T-shirt means to him. Chris Nikic, 21, is the first person with Down Syndrome to complete an Ironman Triathlon in under 17 hours. Once Chris Nikic was back on his bike, he was descending a hill at more than 20 mph. As for those who didn’t believe Chris Nikic could conquer a goal, his dad said they need to be more positive.

Harbor House of Central Florida, a nonprofit that helps domestic violence victims, is getting the support from some big names. It was a big day for Harbor House of Central Florida whose mission is to provide shelter and support to women who are victims of domestic abuse. My father always taught me you have to protect and provide for your women,” O’Neal said. The women and staff at Harbor House will also receive special training from Close the Gap foundation. Start bringing people closer together and start taking care of the people that need our help the most,” he said.

She lost several trees including one that crashed through her house on East Washington Avenue, leaving behind a huge hole. With help from the City of DeLand which is known as Tree City USA, Courville will be able to pick up free trees at the Leigh Matusick Airport Management Center starting next Monday. “Our residents went through a pretty stressful event with the tornado in August and we’ve been trying to think of ways that we can help them out,” said DeLand city spokesman Chris Graham. Graham said they purchased the 500 trees for their annual tree giveaway but cancelled the event due to the pandemic. He said while the city can’t help the residents financially, he hopes the trees will ease the burden.

It turns out there was a parade right in front of her house and it was for her. A drive-by birthday celebration from family, friends and the Winter Springs Police Department. “We recognize that she’s turning 13 at a very turbulent time,” Treva Marshall, Nyah’s mother said. It kind of humanizes the uniform a bit.”The Marshall family said they’re grateful for the relationship their community has with their police department. “It’s police departments like the Winter Springs police department that will help forge the change we need in this country today,” Treva Marshall said.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – As the sun rises over Pelican Bay Country Club in Daytona, retired postal worker, Greg Korkus, is looking forward to a fun morning on the golf course. Korkus is manning the check-in table at the 32nd “Soaring Eagles” Charity Golf Event. The letter carrier welcomes players to the “Famous Polish Hole” where a variety of traditional Polish dishes are offered as part of the registration fee. “Because we were the first ones to start cooking.”A steady flow of socially distanced golf cart traffic stops by the set-up. “The polish hole is pretty important,” Hand says with a smile.

In Florida, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, provides food to more than 550 food banks across Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia counties. In 1992, he decided to join a local food bank. Today, 28 years after starting his journey to help others, he’s the Director of Operations for Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. No matter what it is.”Since the start of the pandemic, Second Harvest Food Bank has distributed about 41 million meals in almost 7 months. “I see a lot of folks out there where they’re in need and by me being in here I could do something to help,” Robledo, a father of two, said.

Two twin brothers are making a difference in their community one sock, at a time.

“De Corazon a Corazon is heart to heart. But then COVID-19 came in and “De Corazon a Corazon” had a new community to reach, right here at home. She said some of these families work in hospitality and have either lost their jobs or homes in the last several months. It’s why Dr. Gonzalez was one of only four people the City of Orlando has designated as an unsung hero during Hispanic Heritage Month. González has provided free meals and healthcare services to marginalized communities in Central Florida during the pandemic by participating in free health fairs.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando city commissioners voted this week to approve $1 million to help fund the My Brother’s Keeper program, expanding it to four new neighborhoods throughout the city. The program is a national initiative started by President Barack Obama aimed at helping minority youth reach their full potential. He said he turned his life around thanks to the My Brother’s Keeper Program. Raysean Brown also mentors kids in Parramore and is a former coordinator for the My Brother’s Keeper program. It’s a tiny community that’s easy to miss. Every Thursday Lisa Green and a handful of neighbors gather at the Midway Safe Harbor Community Center to distribute food to nearby residents. Green and her cousin Emory Green started the Midway Coalition to address the needs of the small community. “I love my community,” Lisa Green said. “To know that someone in the community cares enough to bring the food to you, that’s amazing that’s awesome,” Berry said.

It’s a life-saving example of “getting results” when a guest had a massive heart attack and an Orlando hotel worker jumped into action performing CPR for 11 minutes.

On Sunday around 3:30 p.m., Davis took a 911 call from a mother in Palm Coast who was frantic because her 6-month-old baby was not breathing. Davis walked the mother through CPR and counted with her as she gave the infant compressions. According to the call logs, the baby was breathing again about four minutes after the mother called 911. No one there knew CPR so over speakerphone Davis explained how to perform CPR to the family, according to FCSO. Davis now has four leaves on the FCSO Communication Centers Tree of Life which honors lives saved by dispatchers.

DeLAND, Fla. Employees at one Volusia County business are helping people through one of the hardest parts of their lives while making a difference in the community. Staff members at Unity Funeral Home in DeLand are helping people navigate the new way of saying goodbye to their loved ones in the age of COVID-19. Its a tough time for everybody right now, licensed funeral director Angela Dallas-Johnson said. She buried her father, grandfather and so many others, she said, thanks to the family-operated business, and she appreciates how theyre helping so many other families during these tough times. This time we're highlighting a funeral home's journey navigating loss during a pandemic, and its message of generosity that's keeping the community alive.

Meridian Christian Academy, Carter Tabernacle CME Church and Mt. Olive Church will be distributing 1,000 bags of food Thursday, July 2. Tameka Thomas, Founder of Meridian Christian Academy says volunteers from all three organizations will be on hand to distribute fruit, vegetables and an assortment of other food in a drive through setting. "We're in the middle of a food desert," Thomas said. "Kids are out of school and for many of them the meal they would get there is the best they'll get."

One child in particular really stood out: A boy who decided he wanted to give back to the community for his 9th birthday. Erica Gamboa said her son, Mason, wanted to use his birthday this year to help out locally. That’s when the idea of a canned food drive came in. “We were able to collect $485, and also a lot of canned goods,” Gamboa said. The canned goods Mason collected on his birthday.

It’s all part of the new Central Florida chapter of Quilts of Valor. Melissa Mathews is the group leader and founded the Central Florida chapter of Quilts of Valor. Our respect for their sacrifice.”Right now the Central Florida chapter of Quilts of Valor has 22 members volunteering their time to sew, but they need funding to cover the costs of materials. On Feb. 21, the chapter will honor three local veterans: a 97-year-old World War II veteran and two Vietnam War veterans. The Central Florida Chapter of Quilts of Valor meets every third Wednesday of the month starting March 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Sewing Studio Fabric Superstore located at 9605 South US 17-19 in Maitland.

In 2020, the founders behind a local movement are encouraging people to take a pledge to be a “good neighbor.”The pledge was created with the goal of becoming a more connected and caring community. STUART, Fla. – It was just a regular lunch shift, but two Florida waitresses received the tip of a lifetime from one table: $850. Susan Morrison and Erin Gross were waiting on a Christmas party of 17 people on Wednesday at metro Diner. But when the bill was paid, the party decided to surprise the waitresses and each chipped in $50. The 59-year-old Morrison says she’s been a waitress for 40 years and has never had this happen. Treasure Coast Newspapers reports the waitresses fought tears as they hugged the woman who planned the lunch event.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Christmas came early for 100 Orlando students who were selected to receive a new bicycle and helmet this holiday season. “My old bike was falling apart and I really need a new one. David Baker with OPD said school resource officers selected the students. Shields brought his old bicycle with him to OPD headquarters so another child can enjoy it. “I am donating my old bike, cause I just got a new one, to a kid who needs a bike,” Shields said.
