BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – There were 15 cases of COVID-19 reported at 12 different Brevard County schools in the weeks leading up to the start of the school year, the Brevard Federation of Teachers union said. In a news release Monday evening, teachers union officials reported the results of a public records request filed with Brevard Public Schools for the numbers of positive cases among district employees and the school sites where they worked. Between Aug. 7 and Aug. 20, at least 15 school employees were diagnosed positive for COVID-19 at 12 sites throughout the county, News 6 partner Florida Today reports. The release came the same day Brevard County students reported for the first day of class. The state union argued the order ran afoul of a mandate under the Florida Constitution that students are entitled to a “safe” and “secure” learning environment.

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – The Volusia County teachers union announced Tuesday it reached a deadlock in negotiations with the school district, issuing an impasse. VUE’s stance is that the district’s plan is unsafe and threatens the lives of over 3,800 educators represented by the union and the overall community. However, we must reconvene in a manner that prioritizes the health and safety for all,” a union spokesperson wrote in a news release. VUE points to the school district’s mask requirements, saying it is walking back on its policy to make it mandatory. “With students scheduled to return to in-person instruction on Monday, there is no time to allow the district to stall at the bargaining table.”Volusia County begins the school year Aug. 31.

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. Seminole County Public Schools has asked 102 people to quarantine after coming in contact with a student who tested positive for COVID-19, the district said Tuesday. Number of people exposed to COVID-19 at Seminole County schools:Hagerty High School: 11Lake Brantley High School: 18Lawton Elementary School: 21Lyman High School: 26Teague Middle School: 11Wilson Elementary School: 15These reports are in addition to the 51 people across the district asked to self-quarantine last week. Lake Mary Elementary and Lake Brantley High reported the presence of COVID-19 on campus last week. As of Tuesday, Lake Brantley High School has 51 people self-quarantining. The district says by its count, there are 153 people in precautionary quarantine since school started on Aug. 17.

News 6 reached out to local school districts to see if they plan on changing their strategy. Several school districts said they are reviewing the judges order and it’s too early to say. Marion CountyA spokesperson with the Marion County school district pointed to their delayed start date, saying they’ve started the school year two weeks after originally planned. Osceola County“The Osceola School District will continue to offer three options: face-to-face learning, digital learning, and Osceola Virtual School,” a spokesperson said. ROCKLEDGE, Fla. Brevard Public Schools shared pictures inside its supply warehouse with pallets of masks, gloves, wipes, hand sanitizer and more personal protective equipment that the district said is headed to every school by Friday. The district said to this point, all schools have at least received some of the personal protective equipment and supplies theyve ordered. Fearing the district's supplies might not have made it before the first day, the Brevard County teachers union said it ordered its own PPE for teachers. OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – With just a few weeks away from the start of the new school year in Osceola County, dozens of teachers and parents raised their concerns with a drive-by protest in front of the administrative building for the school district of Osceola County. “(I feel) anxiety, anxiety...to say the least,” Tamika Lyles, an Osceola County teacher said. “Are the teachers gonna be notified, are the parents gonna be notified when there is a positive case inside our classrooms?” she asked. Osceola County School board already pushed back the date to Aug. 24. According to the county school board, one of those days will be dedicated to new safety protocols.
