21-year-old DeLand man killed in rollover crash

Troopers ID victim in SR 44 crash as Gage Howe

DeLAND, Fla. – A 21-year-old man was killed and another man was injured early Friday in a rollover crash in Volusia County, authorities said.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Gage Howe, 21, of DeLand, died in the crash, which was reported around 1 a.m. on State Road 44 near Eau Claire Avenue, east of DeLand.

Troopers said the driver lost control of a 2000 Ford SUV, which rolled over and struck a fence. Both occupants were ejected in the crash, officials said.

Howe was pronounced dead at the scene, the FHP said.

"He was one of my best friends and I know he loved me," said Login Dopart, the victim's sister. "He was a really good person.”

"He was the best person," said Antonio Ramirez, the victim's friend. "He always thought about anybody else before himself, and he was just a good all-around guy. I knew him since we played baseball when we were little."

The second victim, identified as Noah Dickerhoff, 23, of Maitland, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, the FHP said.

It's not known who was driving.

The FHP said both victims were not wearing a seat belt.

S.R. 44 was shut down in both directions in the area, but the road was later reopened.

An investigation is ongoing.
