WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – A 17-year-old boy was arrested Friday in connection with a hit-and-run that critically injured a teen on a skateboard last month in Winter Garden, police said.
According to an arrest affidavit, the teen was involved in a crash on Feb. 16 near 4200 Winter Garden Vineland Road.

The teen turned himself in on Friday, over a month after the crash occurred, the affidavit shows. Winter Garden police Capt. Scott Allen said the 17-year-old told deputies he was leaving 7-Eleven when he halted at a stop sign at the crosswalk and inch forward.
“At that point in time, you saw the skateboarder come off the sidewalk (and) strike the front area of the vehicle,” Allen said. “(The driver) kind of had the right of way.”
Allen said the driver told them he left the scene because he was scared.
The aunt of the teen skateboarder said he’s still recovering in the ICU after two recent surgeries and is doing a little better. She said he’s able to respond with hand movements, but still can’t speak, and the family is thankful for the support and donations.
The skateboarder’s aunt also said the family is relieved to hear someone is facing charges, which gave them some closure.
Officers said the driver faces a felony charge of failing to stop and remain at the scene of a crash causing severe bodily injury.
News 6 is not naming the suspect because of his age.
