TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A state toll relief program brought into effect in 2023 expired on Monday, meaning Florida drivers could be paying more in the new year.

The program allowed drivers who use toll transponders — such as E-PASS or SunPass — to automatically receive 50% credit to their accounts throughout 2023.

According to state officials, the program was expected to help around 1.2 million drivers, saving the average driver nearly $400 in 2023.

The initial six-month program was launched in 2022, though Gov. Ron DeSantis extended it through Dec. 31, 2023 as part of his “Family Focused Tax Relief” plan.

In September 2023, DeSantis’ office touted the program, saying it had already saved Florida drivers over $300 million at that point in time.

With the program ending, however, these rebates will no longer be applied to accounts, meaning regular commuters along Florida’s toll roads could see higher costs.

The last credit for December will be applied to accounts this month.

Additionally, SunPass announced that its customers have up to 90 days after the program ends to file any disputes they might have.
