VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A wrong-way crash Thursday night on a state road in Volusia County killed three women and left two others injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The triple-fatal crash occurred around 9 p.m. on State Road 40, west of State Road 11.

The FHP said a 55-year-old Orlando woman drove a sedan east in the westbound lane.
According to an FHP crash report, the Orlando woman was in the direct path of an SUV that had four occupants and was traveling west in the westbound lane. The front of both vehicles collided, the report stated.
The Orlando woman was pronounced dead at the scene, as were the driver and a passenger in the SUV, identified as a 51-year-old woman from Charlotte, North Carolina, and a 74-year-old woman from Brooklyn, New York, respectively.

The SUV’s remaining two passengers — a 45-year-old woman and 44-year-old woman, both of Charlotte — suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the wreck and were hospitalized, troopers said.
Troopers believe the Orlando woman was not wearing a seat belt in the crash while the SUV’s occupants all were.
