The Florida Highway Patrol has released its crash data for 2023, revealing just how deadly the year was for car crashes in Central Florida.
Among the data, troopers included information on the number of crashes involving fatalities, bicycles, pedestrians, hit-and-runs and more.

In 2023, the FHP reported 83,628 crashes in Brevard, Flagler, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole, Sumter and Volusia counties. That’s a drop of around 4% from 2022.
According to FHP’s data, the following counties rank among the highest in Central Florida for the following types of crashes:
- Total Crashes per Capita: Orange County (17.55 crashes per estimated 1,000 people)
- Fatal Crashes: Flagler County (1.55% of Flagler crashes)
- Bicycle Crashes: Brevard County (3.29% of Brevard crashes)
- Motorcycle Crashes: Flagler County (5.58% of Flagler crashes)
- Pedestrian Crashes: Volusia County (3.46% of Volusia crashes)
- Hit-and-Run Crashes: Volusia County (26.77% of Volusia crashes)

BREVARD COUNTY
- Total crashes decreased by 3.31% from 2022
- Total fatal crashes decreased by 5.32% from 2022
FLAGLER COUNTY
- Total crashes decreased by 1.32% from 2022
- Total fatal crashes decreased by 12% from 2022
LAKE COUNTY
- Total crashes increased by 0.87% from 2022
- Total fatal crashes decreased by 6.06% from 2022
MARION COUNTY
- Total crashes decreased by 4.62% from 2022
- Total fatal crashes decreased by 15.89% from 2022
ORANGE COUNTY
- Total crashes decreased by 2.93% from 2022
- Total fatal crashes decreased by 24.88% from 2022
OSCEOLA COUNTY
- Total crashes decreased by 13.42% from 2022
- Total fatal crashes decreased by 2.90% from 2022
- Osceola County had the greatest drop in total crashes throughout Central Florida
POLK COUNTY
- Total crashes decreased by 2.83% from 2022
- Total fatal crashes increased by 9.84% from 2022
- Polk County had the greatest rise in fatal crashes throughout Central Florida
SEMINOLE COUNTY
- Total crashes decreased by 2.13% from 2022
- Total fatal crashes decreased by 6.25% from 2022
SUMTER COUNTY
- Total crashes increased by 1.19% from 2022
- Total fatal crashes decreased by 45.71% from 2022
- Sumter County had the greatest rise in total crashes throughout Central Florida
- Sumter County had the greatest drop in fatal crashes throughout Central Florida
VOLUSIA COUNTY
- Total crashes decreased by 7.73% from 2022
- Total fatal crashes decreased by 20.47% from 2022
To avoid crashes, FHP offers the following tips for road safety:
- Don’t drive impaired. If you are planning to have alcoholic beverages, plan to have a designated driver or ride share service get you home safely. Never drive drug impaired.
- If you see an impaired or aggressive driver, call *FHP (*347) or 911.
- Obey speed limits and practice courtesy on the highway.
- Buckle up. Your seat belt is your vehicle’s best safety feature.
- ATVs and off-road vehicles are to be driven on unpaved roadways -- never on the highway.
- Don’t drive distracted. Keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel and mind on driving.
- Get plenty of rest before you get behind the wheel. Drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as impaired driving.
