ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the roads, helping Central Florida residents become better drivers by being better educated.
Trooper Steve on Tuesday was asked, “Are motorcycles allowed to drive between vehicles? I have seen this a lot on I-4 lately.”

Trooper Steve said he’s a big fan of motorcycles, but some moves just aren’t safe.
“Here in the state of Florida, you are not allowed to ‘split lanes’ in any capacity -- unless you are instructed to do so by a law enforcement officer,” he said.
In other states, including California, motorcyclists are allowed to drive between vehicles as long as the bikers do not exceed the speed limit.
“In Florida, it’s not allowed because the state sees it as a dangerous act,” Trooper Steve said.
A motorcyclist caught splitting lanes in Florida could be cited for careless or reckless driving, he added.
