LAKE MARY, Fla. – A Seminole County deputy was taken to a hospital early Wednesday after a driver crashed into a sheriff’s cruiser in an I-4 construction zone in Sanford, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The crash, which happened around 4:05 a.m. on I-4 east near Lake Mary Boulevard, caused major backups on the interstate during the morning commute.
The FHP said a 63-year-old Michigan man was driving a 2009 Pontiac G8 east on I-4 when he suffered a possible medical episode. The Pontiac struck the left side of the Seminole County sheriff’s SUV, which was parked nearby to assist with a lane closure due to the construction work, troopers said.
According to the FHP, the deputy, who was standing on the right side of the cruiser, was knocked to the ground.
The deputy and the Michigan man were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, the FHP said. The sheriff’s office said the deputy had been released from the hospital with no significant injuries.
An investigation is ongoing.
