MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A man and a woman riding a motorcycle through Marion County late Friday were killed in a crash with a turning SUV, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 25 and SE 104th Trail, troopers said.

According to an FHP crash report, the motorcyclists — a 25-year-old Ocklawaha man operating the bike and a 22-year-old Anthony woman riding as passenger — were traveling eastbound on State Road 25 as an SUV was traveling north on SE 104th Trail.

The SUV’s driver, a 52-year-old Belleview woman, made a left turn onto State Road 25 without sufficiently checking for traffic, the report states. The SUV traveled into the path of the motorcycle and the Ocklawaha man was unable to react in time to avoid a collision, trooper said.

Both occupants were thrown from the bike once it struck the SUV’s left fender, according to FHP. They were pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said, adding they were both wearing helmets in the crash.

The Belleview woman was hospitalized for treatment of serious injuries, the report states. Troopers said she was wearing a seat belt.

FHP is still investigating.
