Petitioners demand red light at dangerous south Brevard intersection

With growth, time to upgrade two-way stop at Babcock, Grant, neighbors say

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Hundreds of people are signing a petition to put a red light at a dangerous intersection in South Brevard County.

There once weren’t many people living around Babcock Street and Grant Road, but now the sound end of Brevard County is booming.

And with just a two-way stop, and not a light, neighbors say more people are getting into wrecks, some dying.

Palm Bay’s city engineer said a recent traffic study from the Space Coast TPO found Babcock and Grant is a high crash intersection.

The intersection ranked in the county’s top five intersections for motorcycle crashes.

“There’s a lot of new growth, a lot of traffic, and I’ve seen multiple accidents there,” Virginia Poole told News 6′s James Sparvero.

Poole has lived within walking distance of the intersection for eight years.

“In fact, I actually turn before Babcock to avoid the four-way so that I can get out a little bit easier without being at risk,” she said.

Poole estimated her neighborhood has grown at least three times the size of when she first moved in.

Palm Bay and Melbourne topped U-Haul’s most recent list of the fastest-growing American cities.

“All those new homes are going up so it’s busy,” Poole said.

Palm Bay’s city engineer said before a light is added there needs to be an engineering study.
